Norwegian Stave Churches

Christianity came to Norway between 995 and 1030AD. As a result, churches were built which were ornamented with carvings, such as dragon-heads, that showed a marriage of Christian and Viking symbols. These churches take their names from the distinctive building technique using vertical staves. From over 1000 that were built, less than 30 remain today.

STANDING STONES OF SCOTLAND
This design was one of many introduced
to Celtic Scotland and Northern Britain
from Scandinavia during the Viking Age
from 700 to 1200 AD. Examples of these designs can be found throughout Northern Europe on standing stones, decorative
church metalwork, and elaborate jewelry. Patterns such as the spiral and knot work
were not the invention of Celtic and Saxon artists but were some of the first symbols
used by humans to express their spirituality and the wonder of the world around them.

Materials: Timtex base, copper shim, paints, waxes and foils, embroidery threads and yarn.
Technique: Heat and dry embossed,
hand and machine embroidered.
Price: $230
