All That Glitters is Not Gold
The quest for gold has led many men on a fool's journey. In 1576, the
Elizabethan adventurer Martin Frobisher set out to discover the
north-west
passage to China, west of Greenland, across the barren wastes of
northern
Canada. He traveled to the arctic thrice, each time returning with tons
of ore
that glittered with promise, and each time finding neither any gold nor
any
passage.

Size: 60" x 85"
Technique: Applique, hand & machine embroidered
Material: Silk, cotton, metallic fabrics
Price: $4225

Aurora Borealis
The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are both a familiar
sight and a bit of magic in the harsh environment of the arctic lands.
These dancing lines of purple and green playing across the frosty
night skies would have been a joy and a terror to behold for the
Elizabethan adventurer who did not understand their origins.

Size: 42" x 7 feet
Technique: Shibori and indigo dyed
Material: Silk scarf

Starry Starry Night
Elizabethan adventurers would have been intimately familiar with the
northern
starscape as it was one of the few ways they had to navigate the seas,
when
nautical instruments were in their infancy. This piece sets the
sparkling stars
of
the clear arctic air on a background of blue silk.

Size: 42" x 7 feet
Technique: Shibori and indigo dyed
Material: Silk scarf

Above and Below
The patterns of nature repeat. Here, the wood grain found in the planks
of
the 16th century sailing ships is echoed in the ripples on the waters
where
they sail, mimicking the lines of motion above and below, in the wood
and
the waves.

Size: 40" x 24"
Technique: Hand & machine embroidered
Material: Hand dyed linens, thread, wood
Price: $990

Elizabethan Jewels
Emeralds and amethyst, gold and pearls - richly jeweled clothing was
commonplace in the Elizabethan courts through the end of the 1500s.
Embroiderers and seamstresses were kept occupied in the laborious work
needed to decorate garments for the courts, and, more importantly,
for the Queen herself.
Size: 12" x 12"
Technique: Hand dyed, felted, hand embroidered, beaded
Material: Merino wool, cotton lame, beads

High Masts, High Hopes - The Carrack
On his explorations to the arctic, Frobisher was accompanied by an
armada
of 15 ships, over 400 men, and the hope and dreams of his backers.
This was, and remains, the largest maritime expedition ever mounted to
the
arctic.
This ship, a carrack, was the largest, providing generous space for the
crew and
their
provisions, as well as for the treasured ore to be brought back home. It
can be
identified
by the castle structures built into the hull with their rigging elements
and its
rounded stern.

Size: 33" x 33"
Technique: Contemporary embroidery, mixed media
Material: Tissue paper, felt, chalk and oil pastels, ink, embroidery
threads

Technique: Contemporary embroidery, mixed media

Material: Tissue paper, felt, chalk and oil pastels, ink, embroidery
threads

Icy Reflections
Snowflakes and ice crystals define the arctic. Snowflakes form round or
pointy
shapes depending upon the temperature of the air as they fall – the
optimum
temperature for the atypical pointy snowflake is -10 to -15c.

Size: 24" x 30"
Technique: Quilted, burnt, applique, painted canvas
Material: Mixed media

Ninety Words For Snow
It is a modern legend that the Inuit have an unusually high number of
words for
snow, often noted as being dozens, hundreds, and sometimes even
"thousands."
While
the actual number of words is subject to dispute based on definition, it
seems
fitting
there should be as many words as there is variety of snowflakes.

Size: 30" x 36"
Technique: Quilted, burnt, applique, painted canvas
Material: Tissue paper, felt, chalk and oil pastels, ink, embroidery
threads
Price: $1490

Ice Binds Heaven and Earth
In the undefined landscapes of the north, where even the horizon

to the
shifting snow by the ice that captures their dance.

Size: 15" x 15"
Technique: Contemporary embroidery, mixed media
Material: Oil stick, tyvek, angelina, timtex base, embroidery threads

Sails of the Qallanaat #1
Surely the white man's ships sailing into Inuit waters were a wonder
to
behold.
These men were unprepared for the severity of nature they would deal
with, yet
their
cultural superiority would not allow them to admit, or learn from, the
Inuit's
profound
knowledge of their world.

Size: 35" x 25"
Technique: Contemporary embroidery, mixed media
Material: Tissue paper, felt, chalk and oil pastels, ink, handmade felt,

Between a Rock and a Hard Place
To the early explorers, the hard and frozen crusts of the known edge of
the
earth brimmed
with the prospects of riches. The rocks which Martin Frobisher brought
back from
his first voyage
excited so much interest that he was sent back the following year.
Almost all
pretext of
searching for a northwest passage was abandoned in favour of this search
for
gold.
They set up camp on Kodlunarn Island in Frobisher Bay, and for a month
they
mined away,
loading nearly two hundred tons of ore into their ships. All this ore
was
carried back to England,
and even before it was assayed a third and larger voyage was being
planned.

Size: 18" x 28"
Technique: Painted, drawn, machine stitched
Material: Acrylics, felt markers, thread
