ARTICULATION is a group of 9 women from Western Canada who have taken the prestigious City and Guilds of London four-year program in Embroidery and Design. Following their graduation exhibition in March of 2004 they stayed together as a group and began their artistic careers by launching exhibitions and sales throughout the west. The focus of this group is to use textiles as an expression of art, whether it be two dimensional (wall hangings and panels) or three dimensional (bags and boxes) - they take the traditional embroidery techniques and give them a contemporary twist.

The Articulation group is composed of:

Miriam Birkenthal (Winnipeg, MB) Donna Clement (Calgary, AB)
Leann Clifford (Regina, SK) Gloria Daly (Duncan, BC)
Wendy Klotz (Calgary, AB) Ingrid Lincoln (Winnipeg, MB)
Vickie Newington (Calgary, AB) Rebecca Paterson (Sussex, NB)
Lesley Turner (Calgary, AB)

Group Study Session #1: In June 2004 we gathered together for a part of a week for study sessions at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Dinosaur Provincial Park using different painterly techniques and photography. This amazing site is largely undiscovered in a remote area of Alberta (Brooks) and we feel strongly that images from it should be presented to the public honouring this unique geological region which tells a story of glaciers and erosion that formed its fascinating landscape. Inspiration was everywhere - the colours of the sand and mudstone; the bark on the ancient groves of cottonwood trees; cactuses blooming in the spring; the meandering Red Deer River; and, of course, the hoodoos. This work is the inspiration for our group's first commercial exhibit, which was held at The Station Cultural Centre in Okotoks AB in May of 2005.

Group Study Session #2: In February 2005 we gathered in Cold Lake, Alberta to study the Canadian winter. Focusing mainly on northern lights and different ice formations, work from this session has been picked up by the Calgary Opera to be unveiled along with their newly commissioned work "Frobisher" in January 2007.

Group Study Session #3: In June 2006 we met in Winnipeg, Manitoba to study the architecture of historical buildings in the downtown area. This show has now been booked into galleries in Edmonton and Winnipeg for 2009.

Group Study Session #4: In September 2007 we met on Vancouver Island, BC to doing day trips out of the Duncan area. We took photographs and started design work on the rainforest, the mighty redwoods, and Douglas fir.

Group Study Session #5: In March 2008 we gathered in the Leighton Artist Colony at the Banff Centre to start a new study entitled "Women Rock." We had speakers come to discuss their specialties (photography, geology, the environment, glaciers). We shall be returning in 2009 for another month in our cabin in the woods.

Group Study Session #6: In August 2008 we head out to Regina, Saskatchewan to start a new study on the Canadian farmers and prairies.

Group Study Session #7: In March 2009 we gathered in the Leighton Artist Colony at the Banff Centre to continue "Women Rock."

Group Study Session #8: In September 2010 we will be going to the Maritimes to study the shoreline of the Bay of Fundy.
